Parlez-vous français? In May of Year 11 you will take your GCSE Speaking Test. This is conducted by your teacher, recorded on tape and then marked by the exam board’s examiners. There are two levels for the test- Foundation and Higher. Your teacher decides with you in Year 11 which level is most appropriate for you

Role play In section 1 you carry out one role play based on a stimulus. Before the test starts you have approximately 10 minutes preparation time during which time you may make notes. You can take these notes with you into the exam room.

Presentation + Questions In section 2 you give a presentation and discuss it with your teacher. Your presentation will be based on a stimulus provided by you which you have prepared prior to the test. You will be expected to speak for between 30 and 90 seconds and to answer questions for a further 30-90 seconds (up to 3 minutes in total)

Conversation Section 3 is a general conversation based on 2-3 of the topic areas listed below. You will be expected to discuss past, present and future events, involving the use of different tenses and to express personal opinions. This part of the test lasts 4-6 minutes for Foundation and 6-8 minutes for Higher

Marks awarded Role play: 4 marks Presentation & questions: 12 marks Conversation: 20 marks TOTAL : 36 marks Your marks are awarded for: Communication Spontaneity & fluency Quality of language (range & complexity/ pronunciation & accuracy) Your speaking test structure
