Two equations that represent two different relationships with respect to the same two unknown variables . Ex: set up two different equations to model the two different relations: The cost to begin production on a band’s CD is $1500. Each CD costs $4 to produce and will sell for $10 each. The band wants to know how many CDs they will have to sell to earn a profit

Solve one equation for the variable with a coefficient of 1 or -1 (or for the coefficient that is easiest to solve for) Substitute the expression equal to the variable into the other equation and solve for the remaining variable Substitute this variable into either equation to find the value for the original variable. The resulting point is the solution

Use this method when one of your variables have the same coefficients or the coefficients are additive inverses (opposites) Write the equations so the variables are aligned Add or subtract the equations to eliminate one variable Substitute and solve for the other variable Write your solution as an ordered pair
