HACC’s Language Institute Falls under the Workforce Development Division, Adult Education Pathways Department, non-credit offerings Created in 2009 out of a special initiative grant received through the HACC Foundation First class session included approx. 40 students one morning and one evening, multi-level ESL course along with one evening Spanish GED prep. course at the Harrisburg campus only Currently serving nearly 1000 students per year, offering: 3 levels of ESL (beginner, intermediate & advanced) in the morning at Harrisburg and Lebanon campuses and 3 levels in the evening at Harrisburg Lebanon and Lancaster campuses Evening Spanish GED prep. course at Harrisburg campus 3 hour workshops in Writing for College and the Workplace, Conversation through Reading and Introduction to Basic English at Harrisburg and Lebanon campuses Multiple off-campus ESL training courses through partnerships with Central PA business and community agencies

Tools for Building an Academically Sound ESL Program Managed Enrollment Structured Intake and Orientation Procedures Importance of Deadlines and Making/Keeping Appointments Emphasis on Assessment Formal and Authentic Innovative Curriculum Technology in the Classroom Emphasis on Immersion Learning Learning opportunities in both a whole level and/or multi-level experience Expert Instructors training in Differentiated Instruction

Tools for Building a Student-Centered, Needs-based ESL Program Seeing the Students as Whole Learners Parents, Workers, Community Members, some are Highly-skilled and/or Highly Educated in their homelands, others come with very little education in their native languages, Refugees fleeing wars, persecution or lack of basic survival needs Advising/Transition Management Outreach, Follow-up and Patience
