2 SOME SOLUTIONS Top-down approach training of senior faculty at teaching institutions who then will train others. Educational programs including practical workshops and on site hands-on training Capacity building of healthcare personnel;physicians,nurses midwives,traditional birth attendants (TBAS).

3 OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES DURING LAST 30 YEARS * Workshops and CME programs held in major Institutions in India. * AIMS Delhi,Chandigarh * Niloufer Hospital,Hyderabad * Sion Hospital,Bombay * KEM Hospital,Bombay * Child Trust Hospital,Madras * Vani Vilas Hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Inst.,Bangalore * Manipal Inst.,Manipal * JN Medical College,Belgaum * Collaboration with NNF and IAP. * Participation in Govt. sponsored TOTKN program.

4 AAP / IAP COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITIES PEDIATRICS - The official journal of AAP was granted to be reproduced in India for low cost circulation, through the support of Manipal Academy of Higher Education. In year 2000 a first ever combined IAP / AAP CME was held in Mumbai. The Indian Faculty will present its first CME at AAP annual meeting in year 2002. PALS - The Pediatric resuscitation training program is also initiated at national level. Numerous educational Faculty Exchange Programs between the two organizations are being developed.

5 COLLABORATION WITH ALL INDIA MEDICAL SCIENCES (AIIMS) DELHI. Besides several faculty exchanges, a number of research activities pertaining to Neonatal Resuscitation were carried Drs. Vinod Paul and Ashok Deorari faculty members of AIIMS have been conducting research supported by AAP. The results of their research have been presented at major American Pediatric Societies. Through the efforts of Dr. Bhutani member of AAPI a nursing training program, ventilator care program was also initiated.

6 “ NALS ON WHEELS” A Mobile Neonatal Resuscitation Program Rural Orissa Supported by AAPI Charitable Foundation with a grant of $10,000. This grant led to training of 700 healthcare personnel in the Ganjam District in neonatal resuscitation. Its also developed an indigenous production of face masks from plastic IV bottles.

7 UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO JN MEDICAL COLLEGE, BELGAUM COLLABORATION In 1998 a institution to institution collaboration between UIC and JNMC was established for the purpose of faculty development and initiation of new clinical programs at JNMC / KLES Hospital. Over the last three years 40 bilateral faculty exchanges took place. Special programs in Medical Education, Regional Perinatal Program and Anesthesia were developed. A collaborative research effort led to obtaining a NIH grant of 2.3 million dollars to study maternal mortality in rural areas.
