2 Definition Socialization = process through which people learn the expectations of a society. A lifelong process of learning all the knowledge, skills and attitudes we need to know to function

3 Aspects of Socialization
Sociologists focus on the learning of behaviour that is acceptable or unacceptable in our society

4 Psychologists focus on the areas of socialization that affect the development of our personality.
Anthropologists see socialization as the means by which human societies are produced. Because of socialization we need to form institutions like families, schools, etc.

5 Sapienization Sapienization is the anthropological term for the process of learning about the components of society that make it distinctly human

6 What Affects Socialization?
1. Is the socialization experience the same for everyone? 2. What can make it different? 3. Read page 120 4. Why does the socialization of a young Inuit living in the North differ from that of a young English speaking person living in southern Ontario?

7 Components of Socialization
Read page 120 and define each of the following words: Primary socialization Secondary socialization Anticipatory socialization Resocialization

8 Discussion Questions How important is the socialization process?
What aspects of socialization are absolutely necessary? If one person is the only provider of socialization that a child has, what concerns might you have for the child?

9 Isolates Read page 122 Define isolates.
