2 What makes you suspicious and scared? Suspicion is when something seems untrustworthy to you…you feel something is not quite right. Sometimes you have to evaluate whether a narrator is trustworthy or not. For example, in “The Tell- Tale Heart”, the narrator does not seem reliable and trustworthy because he is insane! Mood- If you are suspicious, it can change your mood, or how you FEEL…. Setting- the time/pace of a story- it can change the mood depending on what it is. For example, a haunted house setting will be more suspicious than an enchanted castle.

3 Points of View (POV) 1 st person POV- uses pronouns such as I, me, we, us, ours 2 nd person POV- refers for YOU to do something….usually directions 3 rd person POV- uses pronouns such as he, she, they, them, it, her, him….

4 2 Types of Conflict External Conflict- a problem with an outside force. Ex- problems between characters, problems with a force of nature, etc Internal Conflict- A problem with in one’s self…For example- Edgar Allan Poe had this….he was a very frustrated individual!

5 Suspense Suspense is created in the story to make a reader want to know what is going to happen next. It can be created by: a. Repeating words or phrases b. Emphasizing details with vivid descriptions c. Describing a characters anxiety or fears

6 Imagery Imagery is using words that appeal to one of your 5 senses- sight, hearing, taste, smelling, touching. For Example- The ice cold wind smelled of the horrible stench of a dead animal. This sentence appeal to both touch (Ice cold) and smell (dead animal stench)

7 Foreshadow, Flashback, Chronological Order Foreshadow- to present and indication of something that is going to happen Flashback- an interruption in a present scene that takes you back in time to something that has happened. Chronological Order- A sequence of events in a story…remember, flashbacks come first!
