2. Biographical Info Born in Boston in 1809 to actress Elizabeth Arnold Poe and an alcoholic father David Poe. When Poe was 2 his father abandoned their family. His mother died the year their father had abandoned the family they were then placed in the care of a wealthy English merchant.

4. Education When the family returned to Richmond in 1820, Edgar continued to excel in private schools and studied Latin and prose. In 1825 John Allan received inheritance and was able to send Poe to the University of Virginia. Poe studied classical and modern languages.

5. Mental State Poe’s mental health mirrored the state of Virginia’s health. Poe became broke and an alcoholic and had to end his education within a year.

6. Writing Style Beauty and the excitement of the soul. During a life of pain and loss Poe began writing haunting tales in which he explored the dark side of human life

7. Movies The Grudge-Dark and gloomy. Saw- Gory, about human nature. Nightmare Before Christmas- Shows the good side to the dark side.
