2 Government Services Key- F= Federal, S= State, L= Local Community College System (S, L) –Post Secondary Education –2 year school with programs that range from GEDs to associate degrees –Most have transfer programs to 4 year schools

3 Government Services (cont.) Cooperative Extension Service (F, S) –A partnership between the state’s land- grant universities and community agencies to help improve the lives of citizens through research & education Focus on agriculture, home atmosphere, economic development, & the environment

4 Government Services (cont.) Court Facilities (F, L) –Hold civil and criminal court proceedings Libraries (L) –Provide a service for people to check out books and read or due research at home Museums (F, S, L) –Institutions open to the public which conserve and display artifacts

5 Government Services (cont.) Elections (F, S) –A board carries out the process effectively Jails, Prisons, & YDC (S) –Jails for short periods of time or transfer –Prisons for long periods of time –YDC house juveniles convicted of major crimes

6 Government Services (cont.) Mental Health Services (F, S) –Services for the treatment of mental illness, drug addiction, and emotional problems Public Health Services (F, S) –Provides services meant to ensure the health of citizens

7 Government Services (cont.) Social Services (F, S) –Provide services necessary for the community Ex- Safe homes for abused children, helping impoverished families, helping families in crisis Soil and Water Conservation (F, S) –Programs that protect ad conserve the state’s soil & water resources

8 Government Services (cont.) Airports (S, L) –Provide travel and shipment by providing landing and loading areas for aircraft Ambulance Services (L) –Provide emergency transportation Public Schools (F, S, L) –Ensures that every NC citizen has an opportunity for a quality education

Public Transportation/Buses (F, S, L) –Larger cities provide buses to help people get around to aid in crowding of roads –FTA provides funding to these cities Emergency Management Agencies (F,S,or L) –Agencies who are concerned with public safety and those other agencies concerned with huge natural disasters

10 Government Services (cont.) Parks and Recreation (S, L) –Responsible for maintaining local and state parks Public Housing (F) –Gov’t owned housing for low-income families Public Utilities (S) –Companies that provide electricity, water, gas, sewage, and other community essentials
