Spelling Bee Winners Period 1- Stephen Graziose

Common Nouns Common nouns are people, places, or things, that are not specific. Ex. school, teacher, day

Proper Nouns Proper nouns are the specific names of people, places, or things. Ex. Woodmere Middle School, Dr. Mossey, Tuesday

Pronouns A pronoun is a word that replaces another noun in a sentence, so that we do not repeat the same words over and over. Len was feeling tired, Len needed some sleep. Len was feeling tired, he needed some sleep. Ex. I, me, she, her, we, ourselves, etc.

Articles Articles are used to modify nouns (they are a type of adjective). There are only three articles. One definite article, and two indefinite articles.

Articles “The”, is the definite article. It is used when there is only one version of the noun being described. “Let’s go speak with the principal.” The word “the”, in this sentence, ensures that there is only one person who the speaker could be talking about.

Articles “A” and “an” are the indefinite articles. They are used when there are a variety of possible nouns being discussed. “Let’s go talk to a teacher.” The word “a” shows that there are a number of possible teachers the person could speak with. “ I clicked to open an email.” The word “an”, shows us that there are more than one possible email for the person to open.

Prepositions Prepositions tell the reader the relationship between a noun and another noun or pronoun. Think of them as the relationship between this caterpillar and an apple.
