Aims and purposes of the course Teach students to use English for their further education and work at level B1 (Common European Framework), and also to apply the knowledge of English in the chosen speciality Consolidate skills acquired by students in the course of studying English during 1 - 3 years of university studies.

The requirements and the profile of prospective student. Access to the Internet not less than required to complete the course (48 hours) Skills of working with MS Word for Windows, e-mail and Internet sites Availability of the programs MS Office, Internet Explorer, WinZip or similar software, Windows Mediaplayer Level of English not lower than Intermediate (B1 CEF)

Introduction (F2F module) Format description of final assessment and the content of exam, the procedure and the criteria of marking. The requirements for students, the examples of examination texts – 1 hour Course interface, registration, navigation in the course – 1 hour back

Module I Use of English. Grammar: revision of tenses (active voice). The comparison of the following tenses: Present Simple and Present Continuous, Past Simple and Past Continuous, Present Perfect and Past Simple, Present Perfect and Present Perfect Continuous – 4 hours. Revision of tenses (passive voice)– 2 hours Writing. Rules and examples of abstract writing – 1 hour Speaking and vocabulary: “Education”. Searching for information, building up the glossary, material selection - 1 hour back

Module II Use of English. Grammar: revision of the infinitive and the infinitive constructions, the versions of translation from English into Russian. Exercises for improving translation skills – 6 hours. Speaking: “Scientist-mechanician”: Texts for reading, exercises for developing speaking skills – 2 hours. back

Module III Use of English. Grammar: revision of the participle and the participial constructions, the versions of translation, exercises for improving translation skills – 6 hours. Speaking: “Speciality”: vocabulary (speciality “mechanics”) and exercises for developing speaking skills – 2 hours. back

Module IV Use of English. Grammar: revision of the gerund and the gerund constructions, the versions of translation into Russian, exercises for improving translation skills – 5 hours. Speaking and Vocabulary: “Education in Great Britain”. Texts? Vocabulary exercises and exercises for developing speaking skills – 5 hours. back

Module V Use of English. Grammar: revision of the conditional sentences and the emphatic constructions, exercises for developing translation skills – 5 hours. Speaking and Vocabulary: “Education in the USA”: Texts and vocabulary exercises, tasks aimed at improving speaking skills – 5 hours. back

Desirable results A student can: Read and understand special articles related to his/her speciality, using a dictionary if necessary Translate special articles with grammar and vocabulary accuracy Compose an abstract with desired degree of correctness Use English in his/her speech properly according to B1 Level (Common European Framework) end
