mold fossils - a fossilized impression made in the substrate - a negative image of the organism cast fossils - formed when a mold is filled in FOUR TYPES OF FOSSILS
4
FOUR TYPES (CONTINUED) trace fossils - fossilized nests, burrows, footprints, etc. true form fossils - fossils of the actual animal or animal part.
5
What are fossils? Fossils are the remains of dead plants and animals. Fossils can help tell us about the past events of earth.
6
Fossils Most fossils are found in sedimentary rock. Once the original organisms died, they became trapped in sediments, which over time hardens into rocks. This is an example
7
What is preserved? The most likely materials to survive fossilisation are shells and objects constructed from resistant materials, such as Coral. Softer materials survive only when conditions are extremely favorable.
8
Fossil Developed The earliest fossils of complex life date from around 600 million years ago bacteria may have existed up to 3 billion years earlier. dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago!
