21
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Liner Wear and Top Ring Weight Loss Severity Issues –Noted in May during review of reference data for target update –Investigated by TMC, Mack, and TEI
22
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Severity Investigation Issues Examined –Lab influences –Hardware batches –Reference oils –Liner measurements –Differences in operating parameters
23
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Severity Investigation General Observations –Hardware batches Change in batch from D to F Possible change in liner supplier, Mack to confirm Difference in liner surface finish significant, but no impact found on results Batch F hardware has been run at Labs A and G only T-9 results on same hardware do not confirm T-10 results
24
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Severity Investigation General Observations –Liner measurements Labs A and G switch from Talysurf to PDI Differences seen in results –Lab A: 32.3 Talysurf 29.6 PDI –Lab G: 34.4 Talysurf 25.9 PDI Lab G switch coincides with batch F Round robin at same time shows good agreement in measurements throughout industry
25
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Severity Investigation General Observations –Differences in operating parameters Blowby –Lab G extremely low compared to industry –Unknown if difference is real or measurement problem –Potential impacts?? Humidity –Lab D extremely high compared to industry –Unknown if difference is real or measurement problem –Potential impacts??
26
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Severity Investigation Cylinder Liner Wear –Lab Influence Lab G mild –Hardware Batch No effect found –Reference Oil No effect found
27
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Severity Investigation Cylinder Liner Wear –Liner Measurements Effect not likely Next round robin to confirm –Operating Differences Effect unknown but not likely –Differences existed prior to severity changes
28
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Severity Investigation Cylinder Liner Wear –Conclusion Most likely cause of mild shift is Lab G
29
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Severity Investigation Top Ring Weight Loss –Lab Influence Labs A and G mild –Hardware Batch Labs A and G: Batch F Labs B, D, and F: Batch D Batch F results are mild –Reference Oil No effect found
30
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Severity Investigation Top Ring Weight Loss –Operating Differences Effect unknown but not likely –Differences existed prior to severity changes
31
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Severity Investigation Top Ring Weight Loss –Conclusions Hardware batch may be driving mild shift Lab effects unknown
32
JACTest Monitoring Center T-10 Severity Investigation Proposed Actions –Update Test Targets 12 or 13 tests? Use pooled standard deviation for CLW to account for lab differences –Complications: Top Ring Weight Loss Batch F run only at two labs Batch G to be introduced shortly
33

JACTest Monitoring Center Items for Surveillance Panel Consideration Liner Wear Measurement Procedure –Currently maintained in T-9 standard –Options Keep in T-9. Update via Information Letter. Remove from T-9. Change to referenced document, maintained at TMC. Both T-9 and T-10 updated via Information Letter.
35
JACTest Monitoring Center Items for Surveillance Panel Consideration T-10 Ballot – Information Letter 02-1 –Comment regarding Section 8.4.1 on servicing of injectors Currently: Servicing of injectors is recommended every 300 h. Resetting of injector opening pressure is recommended if pressure is outside the specification Suggested: Inspection of injectors, and cleaning if necessary, is required every 300 h. Resetting of injector opening pressure is required if pressure is outside the specification
36
JACTest Monitoring Center Items for Surveillance Panel Consideration T-10 Quality Index –Operational Plots / Capability Study –Review with lab engineers to establish thresholds –Proposal to be developed by TMC for panel consideration
