The Preaching-The Hearer Romans 10:12-18

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. 2 The Preacher-The Hearer

Introduction The Gospel of Christ is the message of salvation from G od Romans 1:16-17 Christ revealed it to His apostles by the Holy Spirit John 14:26; 15:26, 27; 16:13; Galatians 1:11, 12; Ephesians 3:1-6 The Gospel was spread by preaching Acts 8:4, 12; 10:36; 11:20; 15:35; 20:25 1 Corinthians 1: 17-24; 15:1-4; Romans 16:25 Gospel preaching was commanded by Jesus Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:47; Acts 2:38-39 This command is “even to the end of the world” Matthew 28:19 3 The Preacher-The Hearer

Why So Much Ignorance? Ignorance of Jews about Jesus was not from lack of preaching Acts 13:24-32 They still ignorantly crucified Him Acts 3:17; 1 Corinthians 2:8 Paul (Saul) the persecutor ignorantly rejected Him 1 Timothy 1:13 Present day ignorance of the Lord’s church not caused by preaching alone! Many avenues to learn of the gospel Radio, television, internet, printed material, gospel meetings, etc. Ignorance caused by two factors… Poor preaching! Poor hearing! 4 The Preacher-The Hearer

Preaching Content & Manner Good Preaching is scriptural in content and manner… The Content “…the word…sound doctrine…the truth…” - 2 Timothy 4:1-4 “…the gospel…” - Mark 16:15 “…the oracles of God…” - 1 Peter 4:11 “…the words of faith and of good doctrine…” - 1 Timothy 4:6 “…all the counsel of God…” - Acts 20:20-32 The Manner “…in love…” - Ephesians 4:15 “…speak boldly…” - Ephesians 6:20 “…words with my understanding…” - 1 Corinthians 14:19 5 The Preacher-The Hearer

Preaching Applications Good Preaching Applies the Scriptures… To the Hearers Gives the meaning of scripture - Nehemiah 8:8 Makes the application - 2 Samuel 12:1-7 Convicts the guilty - Acts 2:36 To the Preacher Must be a good example - 1 Timothy 4:12 Practiced what is preached - 1 Timothy 4:16; Romans 2:21, 22 Must discipline his actions - 1 Corinthians 9:27 Must obey, even though the preacher does not Matthew 23:1-3 6 The Preacher-The Hearer

Preaching Continues… Good Preaching Continues Even If No Visible Results Does good even if not seen immediately - Isaiah 55:11 Noah preached while building the ark - 1 Peter 3:19, 20; Hebrews 11:7 Only 8 souls saved - 2 Peter 2:5 120 years of preaching - Genesis 6:3, 5 Must continue sowing the seed of the kingdom God gives the increase - 1 Corinthians 3:6, 7 Fruit might not be realized until the judgment day James 5: 7, 8 7 The Preacher-The Hearer

The Hearers Poor Hears hear but… Don’t get the message - Matthew 13:15; Acts 17:11 Not understanding the importance of the message Hebrews 2:1-4; Acts 24:25; 26:27-29 Lydia “attended” to the message - Acts 16:13-15 Don’t have room in their hearts for the word - Luke 8:14 Have a prejudiced heart - Matthew 13:15; Acts 21:27-36 Apply the message to everyone but themselves 2 Samuel 12:5-7 Pay more attention to the messenger than the message 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; 2 Corinthians 10:10; Romans 16:17, 18 Acts 4:13; Jude 1:15-19; 2 Peter 2:1-18 8 The Preacher-The Hearer

Conclusion The Gospel Message is Hindered by… Poor preaching! Poor hearing! Let us demand scriptural preaching May we be responsible, attentive hearers May we be not hearers only, but doers! 9 The Preacher-The Hearer

James 1:22-25 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. 10 The Preacher-The Hearer
