DO YOU LIKE WHAT YOU SEE IN THE MIRROR JAMES 1:21-25

INTRODUCTION Self examination – 2Co 13:5 Must be – Honest – Humble – Heed God’s word is the best tool to use to examine yourself – Heb 4:12-13 – A mirror does not discriminate! – No matter who you are, what you own a mirror will tell the truth about your looks – God’s word is like that mirror – The Bible will show you exactly who you are with out any discrimination Col 3:25; I Pet 1:17 4 points – Duty v21, Demonstration v22, Delusion v23-24, Decision v25

DUTY v 21 Remove the world: Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness – To lay apart means to renounce or to put away – Rom 13:12; Col 3:8; Heb12:1; Eph 4:22 – Filthiness---Moral filth, evil talk, obscenity, lasciviousness – Superfluity---overflowing or a more than ordinary amount – Naughtiness---Having an evil mind or evil thoughts, a way of thinking – I John 2:15-17 Receive the word: and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. – Receive with meekness---to embrace, to follow, to deliberately accept – Engrafted---means implanted from another souce – Luke 8:11 – Acts 20:32

DEMONSTRATION v 22 Doing: But be ye doers of the word, – It is easy to say, but it is hard to do! – To do means to perform Read Rev 22:14 – We must do what God expects Think how we ought to think, Say what we ought to say, Live how we ought to live I John 3:18 Deceiving: and not hearers only deceiving your own selves. – We are deceiving ourselves if we think we do not have to do exactly what the Bible says II Cor 2:11 – Satan wants you to believe that the little things do not matter One church is just as good as another, Baptism is not necessary, Believe what you want just as long as you believe in Christ,

DELUSION v 23-24 Jas 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: Jas 1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. Forgetting is Foolish – Imagine looking in the mirror and noticing that your hair is not right – Then walking away and forgetting what you look like – Natural----means the kind, or existence – Seeing yourself for who you really are and not doing anything is foolish! Not Doing is Dangerous – When we do not do what God commands we are in danger of eternal damnation – John 8:21-24; Luke 13:3 – We must also do according to the Scriptures – We must do the right thing the right way for the right reason! Rom 12:20

DECISION v 25 Looking in the Law of Liberty: But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty – To look into the law of liberty is to bow, and seek diligently, to look closely, to bend down beside – God’s law is the N.T. (Gal 6:2) – God’s law is perfect (no mistakes, and it is all sufficient) – God has one law for all people (Acts 17:30-31) – It is a law of liberty because it liberates us from sin Living in the Law of Liberty: and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. – To continue means to stay close! – Doing brings blessings – James 1:12
