Title: Metric System Objective: I will be able to convert from one metric unit to another. Question: What is the metric system and how do I use it? Notes:
2
History (no notes) Built by the French Systeme Internationale d’Unites (SI) Based on powers of 10 Adopted by science community and all other countries
3
Base Units (Notes) Meter (m) Liter (L) Gram (g) Kelvin (K) or Celsius ( o C) Second (s)

If you think about it… If you are converting from smaller unit to a bigger unit, does the actual number get bigger or smaller? Vice Versa? mm to Mm Mm to mm What is the relationship between exponential number AND the amount of places the decimal moves?
10
Shortcut… -This method is quick and easy, however like most shortcuts it is easier to make mistakes. Move the decimal the number of places that matches the exponent number you are converting to. If you are moving up then move decimal to the left. If you are moving down then move the decimal to the right.

Volume Conversions Volume of a Solid or Gas by Meters (L x W x H) = ____ m 3, cm 3, etc… 3 m x 3 m x 3 m = 27 m 3 Volume of a Liquid is in Liters 1 cm 3 (cc) = 1 mL 20 cc = 20 mL

Temperature Conversions Celsius to Fahrenheit ( o C x 9/5) + 32 = o F Fahrenheit to Celsius ( o F – 32) x 5/9 = o C Kelvin to Celsius t( o C) = T(K) – 273.15 K Celsius to Kelvin T(K) = t( o C) + 273.15 o C

Temperature Scales Degrees Fahrenheit 32 o F to 212 o F Degrees Celsius 0 o C to 100 o C Kelvin 273K to 373 K) 0K is absolute zero Coldest temp possible All molecular movement stops Never been achieved, but close
