2 Prefixes There are three different word parts – prefixes, roots, suffixes that are used to construct words. If you know the meaning of the individual parts, you can figure out the meaning of a word. Ex: invisible Prefix – in means “not” Root – vis means “to see” Suffix – ible means “capable of being seen” Word – invisible means “not capable of being seen”

Example - interaction, intercede

4 Intra - intramural Definition – within
Example - intrastate, intravenous

5 Ir - irregular Definition – not Example - irresponsible

6 Mal - malfunction Definition – wrong, bad Example - maladjusted

7 Ob - obstacle Definition – against Example - object, obstruct

8 Per - percolate Definition – through Example - perceive, permit

9 Post - postgraduate Definition – after
Example - postglacial, posterior

10 Pre preamble Definition - before Example - prearrange, precaution

11 Pro - prognosis Definition – before, for, in support of, forward
Example - program, prologue, proceed, produce

12 Re recall Definition – back, again Example - recede, reflect

13 Retro retroactive Definition – backward Example - retrospect,

14 Se secure Definition – apart Example – secede, secession,

Example – self-worth, self-respect, self-employed

16 semi - semicircle Definition – half, partly
Example – semiformal, semifinal

17 super - superhuman Definition – over, above
Example – superior, supernatural

Example – transcribe, transportation

19 Ultra - ultramodern Definition – extremely Example – ultraliberal
