Getting A “Taste” For Fractions!
3
I have a pepperoni pizza. Yum! Doesn't it look tasty? I want to find out what fraction, or part, of the pizza I eat when I take a slice.

First I count how many slices we cut our pizza into. Count along with me! 1 2 3 4 5 6 There are 6 slices of pizza. When we write a fraction, we write the total number of parts on the bottom. This is called the denominator. 6 This is the denominator. It tells us how many total parts we have. We have 6 slices of pizza, so we write 6 on the bottom of our fraction. Hmm...I wonder what goes here...

Now I ate a slice of the pizza. Mmm...delicious! What part, or fraction, of the pizza did I eat? The top of the fraction, the numerator, tells us how many parts of the whole we are looking at. I ate 1 slice of pizza, so my numerator is 1. 6 Remember, our denominator tells us how many total parts we have. The pizza was cut into 6 slices. This is the numerator. It shows how many parts we are looking at, or that answer our question. How much pizza did I eat? 1 slice. 1

1 2 3 4 5 6 1616 - what does that mean? Let's take a closer look at our fraction: 1 6 I ate 1 slice of the pizza. My pizza was cut into 6 slices.
