Setting the Stage Decline of the Roman Era ushered in the Middle Ages (medieval period) New institutions emerged to replace the fallen Roman Empire. While China and Southwest Asia flourished Medieval Europe remained fragmented Germanic invaders trigger changes in Western Europe By the 5 th century they had overran the western half of the Roman Empire

Changes Invasions and constant warfare sparked new trends in government, economy, and culture Three factors led to this change 1. Disruption of Trade 2. Downfall of Cities 3. Population Shifts- from towns to rural After the Fall of Rome we have a decline in Learning The Germanic invaders could not read or write. Very few people except Church officials and priests were literate.

Decline in Learning Among the learned the knowledge of Greek was very rare Greek literature, science, and philosophy is all but lost Germanic tribes had a rich oral tradition of legends and songs but no written language. A major loss of a Common Language
