The Formation of the United Nations Throughout WWII the Allied powers spoke about starting "a general international organization to maintain peace and security". Officially proposed by China, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, United States in 1944 Charter was developed and signed in June 1945 by 50 countries Ratified in October 1945 by China, France, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, United States

The Security Council Made up of the “Big Five” United States United Kingdom Soviet Union China France Plus 10 rotating member countries, elected every 2 years responsible for international peace and security Have power to Settle disagreements in peaceful ways Suggest terms for resolutions Impose sanctions Authorize the use of force

Resolution 1 – Establishing Atomic Energy Committee Reason for Resolution: to deal with the problems raised by the discovery of atomic energy Main Purpose: committee present recommendations to Security Council about the control of atomic energy knowledge and weapons in order to maintain international peace Members: One representative from the 15 countries on the Security council and Canada

Resolution 6 – United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) Reason for Resolution : the reconstruction in Europe after WWII is dragging on Main Purpose: a committee to urge members of the UN to plan for or make contributions to the reconstruction of Europe and East Asia, and hopefully complete reconstruction by March 1948 Members: One representative from the 15 countries on the Security council and Canada

Resolution 56 – Political rights of Women Reason for Resolution: Many of the members of the UN did not recognize women as politically equal in their own governments Main Point: to urge member nations to allow for political equality for women in their country

Resolution 181 – Partition of Palestine History of Issue Before WWII, there was animosity between the Jewish and Arab people of Palestine over the holy site of the nation. The Jewish people argued for the creation of a Jewish nation, but Great Britain did not want to upset the Arabs of Palestine. After the Holocaust, Great Britain allowed for over 100,000 displaced people to move into Palestine Specifics of the Resolution and Creation of Israel Palestine would be split into a Jewish state and an Arab state, with Jerusalem controlled by the UN Both states would have a year to set up governments and armies No Jewish person could live in/be a citizen of the Arabian state, and no Arab person could live in/be a citizen of the Jewish state Israel is declared a nation on May 14, 1948
