1
How can we describe the difference between a sheet of loose leaf paper, and a stack of it?
2
In this lesson you will learn to identify the difference between a square unit and a cubic unit by analyzing dimensions.
3
Let’s Review A Common Mistake Students sometimes forget about units. Two? Two birds? Other times, they use incorrect units. Oh… two snakes! Be sure to use correct values and correct units.
4
Let’s Review When we multiply a value times itself, we are squaring that value. When we multiply a value times itself, and then times itself again, we are cubing that value.
5
Core Lesson Square units always have side lengths of 1 unit. (Any unit!) Cubic units always have edge lengths of 1 unit. (Any unit!)
6
Let’s Review Core Lesson We use square units to measure area.
7
Let’s Review Core Lesson 1 ft. “one square foot” foot 2 foot How do we name different square units?
8
Let’s Review Core Lesson 1 plip “one square plip” plip 2 plip
9
Let’s Review Core Lesson How many square feet is that rug? How many square inches is that piece of loose leaf? How many square yards of fabric do we need for the new curtains? We use square units when we compute:
10
Let’s Review Core Lesson We use cubic units to measure the amount of space that a 3D solid occupies.
11
Let’s Review Core Lesson 1 cm. “one cubic centimeter” centimeter 3 centimeter centimeter centimeter 1 cm. How do we name different cubic units?
12
Let’s Review Core Lesson 1 plip “one cubic plip” plip 3 plip plip plip 1 plip
13
Let’s Review Core Lesson Which box contains more cereal? How many blocks can we fit into that container? Which bottle can hold more liquid? We use cubic units when we compute:
14
In this lesson you have learned to identify the difference between a square unit and a cubic unit by analyzing dimensions.
15
Let’s Review Guided Practice Write the name of each unit in two different ways. yard mile yard 2 one square yard mile 3 one cubic mile
16
Let’s Review Extension Activities List three instances where you would want to measure something in SQUARE units. Now, list three instances where you would want to measure something in CUBIC units. Be prepared to explain your responses.
17
Let’s Review Extension Activities Sort through the magazine and articles that your teacher has provided to find references to square units and cubic units. Explain whether the units are being used to measure volume or area.
18
Let’s Review Quick Quiz Name this figure in two different ways. Give one example of a situation where you would need to use square units, and one example of a situation where you would need to use cubic units. inch
