2. Objectives Students will review the “Active Readers” steps in order to practice good reading strategies. Students will use appropriate before and during reading strategies in order to answer a BCR.

3. Warm-Up 1. In your notebook, answer the following question: What are some essential reading strategies? What elements should students think about when they are connecting with a text? Answer the preceding question in a short paragraph format.

5. Active Reading Stategies Con’t Predict Try to figure out what will happen next and how the selection might end. Then try to read on to see how accurate your guesses were.

6. Active Reader Strategies Con’t Visualize Visualize characters, events and setting to help you understand what’s happening. When you read nonfiction, pay attention to the images that form in your mind as you read.

7. Active Reading Stategies Con’t Connect Connect personally with what you are reading. Think of similarities between the descriptions in the selection and what you have personally experienced, heard about, and read about.

8. Active Reading Stategies Con’t Question Question what happens while you read. Searching for reasons behind events and characters’ feelings can help you feel closer to what you are reading.

9. Active Reading Stategies Con’t Clarify Stop occasionally to review what you understand, and expect to have your understanding change and develop as you read on. Reread and use resources to help you clarify your understanding. Also watch for answers to questions you had earlier.

11. Now apply the skills… As I read a story, on a sheet of paper, I want you to predict what the story will be about, at least two images from the story, how can you connect to any of the characters. Also include at least two questions, how they were clarified, and finally evaluate the conclusion of the story.
