July 30, 2011 Dead Ball First Down Kicks Scores 5 When is the Ball Dead? 15 Reasons (see Rule 4-2) Running the ball 1.Runner goes out of bounds 2.Runner touches the ground with other than a hand or a foot 3.Runner’s forward progress is stopped 4.When helmet comes off runner Passing the ball 4.Forward pass is incomplete 5.Forward pass is simultaneously caught Kicking the ball 6.Legal kick breaks the plane of R’s goal 7.Kick is recovered or caught by K 8.After a fair catch signal if kick caught or recovered by R

At the spot of the ball when in player possession in bounds At the spot the ball crosses the sideline when a player goes out of bounds At the spot the ball crosses the sideline when a loose ball goes out of bounds Progress is the forward point of the ball

July 30, 2011 Dead Ball First Down Kicks Scores 9 Mechanics of the Dead Ball In-bounds – if you rule the ball is dead: Blow whistle (Do not echo other’s whistles) Mark progress with feet - together – downfield edge of down field foot at downfield tip of ball Out of bounds - if you rule the ball is dead: Blow whistle (Do not echo other’s whistles) Give time out signal (two times) Get to out of bounds spot Mark with foot Observing action of players in and out of bounds Do not move or retrieve ball until someone releases you from your spot

Downs progress 1 st through 4 th unless a first down is made or if there is an accepted penalty then down is repeated (a few penalties carry loss of down provisions) For A: When line to gain is reached (including affect of dead ball fouls by B on 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd down) For an accepted penalty that includes an automatic first down Defensive pass interference Roughing the passer, kicker, holder or snapper For B: If B is in possession of the ball at the end of a down If A fails to reach line to gain on 4 th down For Team in Possession at end of down if there has been more than one change of possession

For R after legal kick if: Ball is in R’s possession Ball is in joint possession Ball goes out of bounds Ball is dead with no player in possession K is first to touch a scrimmage kick and R accepts spot of first touching For K: If R is first to touch scrimmage kick beyond line of scrimmage and K recovers If K recovers a free kick after it has gone 10 yards and touched the ground

July 30, 2011 Dead Ball First Down Kicks Scores 13 Mechanics for First Down Line Judge: Signal Time out (Twice) Point downfield “hand on chest” to indicate 1 st down gained Shout “Close” if it is too close to call and Referee will come up to line and make decision Referee will: Decide to measure or not Give first down signal Head Linesman Only after Referee signals should chains be moved Mark spot of back chain with foot – back stake is at front tip of the ball Have clip attached to “the back of the closest line” Chains to be set 6 feet off sidelines

July 30, 2011 Dead Ball First Down Kicks Scores 15 Definitions Scrimmage Kick, Free Kick Scrimmage Kick 2-24-4 Legal Kick from in or behind the neutral zone Can be place kick, punt or drop kick Free Kick 2-24-3 A “Kickoff” putting ball in play: To start the half After a score (TD, FG, Safety) After a fair catch (don’t worry about that) Must be a place kick or drop kick (for kickoff after a safety may be a punt) “A kick is a kick” until a player secures possession (catch or recovery)

July 30, 2011 Dead Ball First Down Kicks Scores 16 A Few Other Kick-Related Definitions Kicker 2-32-8 A player who legally kicks the ball Becomes Kicker when his lower leg strikes the ball Remains a kicker until: He has opportunity to regain balance (scrimmage Kick) He advances 5 yards of kick touches ground or another player (Free kick) Holder – Player controlling ball on the ground or on a tee Fair Catch Catch made by a player in or beyond neutral zone after he gives valid fair catch signal (not quite right but good enough for now) Can be awarded if R not given opportunity to catch the ball (whether he signals or not) Signals – valid, invalid, illegal Kick Catch Interference Touch a kick in flight or catch a kick (unless on a scrimmage kick only there is no R player in position to catch kick) Obstruct R’s path to the ball

July 30, 2011 Dead Ball First Down Kicks Scores 17 Free Kick Fundamental Rules Can be made anywhere between hash marks Only Kicker and Holder may be in neutral zone What R can do: Catch or recover any where in field of play and advance (WIND THE CLOCK – ABOUT ONLY TIME YOU WILL START THE CLOCK) Call for a fair catch and give up right to advance What K can do: After ball has gone 10 yards and hit the ground K may recover If ball touches R, then K may catch or recover anywhere What K can NOT do Never advance a kick (DEAD BALL – WHISTLE) Catch a kick (unless first touches an R player) (FLAG) Be first to touch ball in neutral zone (BEANBAG) Kick ball out of bounds untouched by R (FLAG) Obstruct R’s path to ball (FLAG) If kick goes into R’s end zone – immediately a touchback

July 30, 2011 Dead Ball First Down Kicks Scores 36 Scoring Definitions - Force Basics Used only in connection with the goal line Only in one direction (from field of play into E.Z.) The energy exerted by a player that provides movement of the ball Determines whether a safety or a touchback - which team responsible for forcing ball into E.Z Initial Force (carry, fumble, pass, snap or kick) New force – after a fumble, kick or backward pass hits the ground new force may be added (judgment call)

Possession of a live ball in opponent's end zone = touchdown All kicks into R’s end zone are automatically touchbacks If A or K forces ball into their own end zone and ball is dead there in A or K’s possession safety If B or R forces ball into opponent’s end zone and ball is dead there in opponent’s possession touchback

Work more games than I did last year. Work a JV game Work hard and become a respected member of the CCFOA Stretch Goal- Work a Varsity game and enjoy a Pelligrino with the crew after. Five Year Goal- Work a playoff game for older youth and become a White Hat for youth games.
