Media Christ at the Sea of Galilee is a very unique and well known painting. The painting is an oil canvas painting. This means that the artist painted on a canvas with thinned oil paint.

Description The painting “Christ at he Sea of Galilee has many unique elements. Lines are very important in art, they keep the objects separated throughout. In this particular piece of artwork the artist uses subtle lines, lines that are not obvious. That is because the lines are blended within the objects in the picture. Most of the lines in this piece are curvy. Value is what shows the lights and darks in a piece of artwork, and shows where the light source is. Most of the values are in the shadows. There is also value in the clouds as the artist used a range value of blues. The color is what brings all of the art together. Whether it is a range of black and whites or very bright colors. Jacopo Tintoretto uses dark muted colors and values. He uses a combination of shades of green, blue, and browns. This is evidence of organic colors. The colors describe the age of the artwork. Texture is what makes the artwork seem like it’s real. You can see the liquid texture of the waves, and the light, fluffy texture of the clouds. There is a tree in the corner of the painting. The scrapes in the tree shows the tree’s roughness. The objects in this painting are 3- D. Jacopo uses shading to represent the form. Every inch of the painting has something in it. There is no negative space. Jacopo Tintoretto did a very good job using all the elements of art in a unique way.

Analysis This artwork is very complex and has many different features. One is balance. Tintoretto does a very good job spreading the work out. There is not too much of one color. The colors are spread out across the page in a range of lights and darks. It shows radical balance because not everything is the same but it all meets in the middle, for example the waves. The whole painting shows asymmetrical balance. Unity is what makes the artwork a whole. There are similar shapes and colors that keep everything together. Every piece of artwork has pattern, even if it’s not obvious. This specific piece of artwork has irregular patter. That means it is random patterns in the arrangement of the painting. There is repetition in the shapes and lines Toretto uses, especially in the waves. Emphasis is the excitement in the piece. Tintoretto shows emphasis by having a random piece. In this case, it is the tree in the right corner. It is the focal area because it is kind of random with this situation and theme. Movement is not in all pieces of art. However movement is shown in the waves and the people coming out of the boat. The lines and shading lets me see this. There are many important characteristics in this art.

Interpretation This artwork, The Sea of Galilee represents a bible story. I don’t know what the artist meant to accomplish saying in his artwork, other than the fact that he drew a bible story. Maybe he was and felt he was mentally close and connected to God and his religion. Maybe church, Jesus, and the Bible inspired him to illustrate the stories of Jesus and God. He took the story and illustrated what he felt it would look like if he was present at the event. Jacopo Tin Toretto was not alive during this time, so he had to have been inferring. In my eyes, it’s like I can imagine this event looking exactly like the painting. The colors, the waves, Jesus, the boat, all exactly as they show. It makes me feel as if I am in the moment too.

Evaluation I chose and like this piece of artwork because of what I saw. It is about Jesus and I love Jesus. If I could change anything about this piece, it would be to make everything closer up and more clear. How the painting is painted fits the time era of when the painting was painted. The strength of this painting is how realistic to the event it looks. Jacopo Tin Toretto successfully was able to visualize and illustrate a bible story.
