J.P.Delahaye GDE Meeting OXFORD 25-10-05 8 ~ ILC He Inventory of Large Cryogenic Systems
9
J.P.Delahaye GDE Meeting OXFORD 25-10-05 9 Transport of Refrigeration in Large Distributed Cryogenic systems Low Pressure drop over long distances requires large pumping headers !
10
J.P.Delahaye GDE Meeting OXFORD 25-10-05 10 Alternative Configuration Distributed 2 K refrigeration Increase the distance between cryoplant by a factor 2 Require specific alcove for 2K cryoplants but saving of a lot civil engineering and infrastructure as well as reducing of the surface site impact. Require specific study on the design and operation of “underground” warm compressor station Require refrigeration (water) capacity of about 1 to 2 MW per alcove Require an additional header in the cryomodule to return the compressed He (20-30 K, few bar) to the main cryoplant
11
J.P.Delahaye GDE Meeting OXFORD 25-10-05 11 Alternative Configuration Larger cryoplants 4.5 K refrigerator Feasibility study on larger refrigerators (40-50 kW equivalent at 4.5 K) and impacts on cost, layout, operation, site … R&D requirement Warm centrifugal compressor as booster Feasibility study with impacts on cost, operation and reliability. Validation test is mandatory. 2 K refrigeration Feasibility study on larger cold compressors and impacts on cost, layout, operation… R&D requirement
12
J.P.Delahaye GDE Meeting OXFORD 25-10-05 12 Alternative Configuration Cryomodule Cryostat optimization Cost effectiveness of the 5-8 K shield Use of conduction cooled current leads for quadrupole (if HTS retained as baseline). Gain on operation flexibility. Separated distribution line Mainly justified by cost saving, if any (no sectorization required for cryomodule repair or exchange). Could be interesting in case of 2 tunnels (operation availability if the line is in the service tunnel) Could increase the filling factor of the linacs Could be justified if the vibration due to He flow is not acceptable (reduced flows in cryomodules). Could simplified the heat intercept design and efficiency (small pipe can be routed close to the components to be thermalized) The 300 mm pumping header (thickness 6 mm !!) is use as a rigid beam for cavity alignment inside a module (separated line with or without the pumping header?)
