3 3 Ad-hoc Transition Work Group Coordination Group is establishing an Ad-hoc Transition Work Group Work Group will: Support designated SAOGIs during the Administration’s transition Work with the Secretariat to develop ideas/strategies for ensuring continuity for the Coordination Group Identify opportunities for solidifying support

9 9 FGDC Standards Working Group Recommendation on way forward for country codes based on rescinding of Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 10-4 (2-letter codes) Primarily used within the Federal Government Includes U.S. recognized countries/areas special sovereignty NIST withdrew FIPS 10-4, September 2008 Proposal is for the Federal government to adopt 3-letter country codes, as specified by ISO 3166. Impact – Codes are used in many Federal systems The FGDC Standards Working Group recommends: Agencies inventory existing data assets for the use of country codes to devise a transition plan to 3-letter country codes This proposal should also be referred to the CIO Council

10 10 OMB Circular A-119 Reporting Requirement FGDC voluntary consensus standards activities report to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) FGDC Secretariat response is part of the USGS response Reported Activities: INCITS Technical Committee L1, Geographic information systems. INCITS L1 is the means by which the U.S. participates in ANSI and ISO standardization activities for geographic information Open Geospatial Consortium The North American Profile of ISO 19115:2003, Geographic information – Metadata, is close to adoption by both Canada and the United States (ANSI). The USGS is preparing Geodata.gov for the migration from the FGDC Metadata Standard to the North American Profile.
