Man’s Alienation and Reconciliation How the Cross Brings Man Back to God PEACE

Biblical Definition of “Atonement” The Bible word for “atone” is the same as the Bible word for “ reconcile.” 1 Atone = Reconcile 1  and that family of words

Biblical Definition of “Atonement” What does the Bible word, “reconcile,” mean? “And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife” (1Co 7:10,11).

Reconciled by Christ’s Death The fact that we needed to be reconciled implies that we were alienated, enemies. “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life” (Rom 5:10).

Reconciled by Christ’s Death This should make us ask some questions. “What alienated us?” “And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled” (Col 1:21).

Reconciled by Christ’s Death How are we enemies in our minds? “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God” (Rom 8:7, 8). People in this condition “cannot please God.”

Alienation and Reconciliation At birth, we are innocent, and therefore not enemies of God. “For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died” (Rom 7:9).

Alienation and Reconciliation “And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present YOU holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight” (Col 1:21).

Alienation and Reconciliation God Innocent Child Rebellion Insubordination Wicked Works Alienated Enemies Reconciled Child Submission Subjection World

Alienation and Reconciliation To please God and be reconciled to Him, we must have a change of mind and heart. “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Rom 8:6).

Reconciled by Christ’s Death A changed mind is the key to that reconciliation. “To open their eyes, and to TURN them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, THAT they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.” (Act 26:18).

Reconciled by Christ’s Death A changed mind is the key to that reconciliation. “But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live” (Ezekiel 18:21, 22).

Reconciled by Christ’s Death So HOW does Christ’s death create this different mind in us? “ Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus : Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross ” (Php 2:5-8).

Reconciled by Christ’s Death What place does Christ’s death have in creating this different mind in us? “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps” (1Pe 2:21).

The Essence of Our Faith Obedience to death Love Faith Truth Patience On the cross we are looking at the essence of our Faith. Truth We will find that many of these overlap…

Jesus Showed Peace by the Crucifixion

The Crucifixion Itself Was an Act of Making Peace

Romans 5 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

Jesus Was Peaceful to the Ones Who Were Killing Him

Luke 23 33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Jesus Was Peaceful to the Ones Who Crucified Him

1 Peter 2 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously. 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

The Way of Peace

Peace (  ) Is “Peace, Quietness, Rest, Set at One”

The Unrighteous Don’t Know the Way of Peace

Romans 3 17 And the way of peace have they not known…

We Are Commanded to Be Peaceful

Ephesians 4 3 Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Romans 12 18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in YOU, live peaceably with all men.

1 Thessalonians 5 13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

The Pursuit of Peace

2 Timothy 2 22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Follow (  ) Is “Chase After”

Romans 12 12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? 13Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. 14Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and PURSUE it.

Quoted From Psalm 34

1 Peter 3 10 FOR he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: 11Let him eschew evil, and DO good; let him seek peace, and ENSUE it.

Romans 14 19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

Things That Destroy Peace

Defiling the Temple by Destroying Peace

Romans 12 14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.

James 3 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

James 3 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

James 4 1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

Peacemakers

“Them that make peace…” When I get through talking, are people at peace and hopeful for one another, or are they angry and resentful?

The Blessings Of Peace

Matthew 5 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Protection and Answered Prayers

1 Peter 3 10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: 11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

Joy

Proverbs 12 20 Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counselors of peace is joy.

Remind Ourselves Again

Luke 23 33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
