BASED ON THE GOSPEL OF MARK THE ROAD TO CALVARY
2
Through the transfiguration, Jesus disclosed his divine glory, confirming Peter’s words: “You are the Messiah.” This directly followed Jesus’ revelation to Peter, James, and John that he would have to endure the suffering of the cross to enter into glory. (Why?)
3
Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus at the Transfiguration, and this was reflective of Jesus’ own role as bearer of the New Covenant. (How?)
4
Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice: “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” (How does this event give witness to the Trinity?)
5
Even after the Transfiguration, Jesus had to address the challenges to discipleship with which his disciples struggled. He seeks to deepen their understanding as he prepares for His death. (What are some Challenges to Disciple- ship?)
6
One such challenge to discipleship: Wealth It is possible to be possessed by our possessions “…go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven…” See Mk 10:17-22 Why did the rich man walk away sad?
7
Another: Blindness blindness of ambition “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you…Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Mk 10:35-37 other forms of blindness…?
8
Personal Challenges to Discipleship We choose to believe, with the help of God’s freely given grace. What challenges to discipleship do we hope to overcome? Holy Week is a perfect time to reflect on them.
9
The new Passover, initiated by Jesus at the Last Supper, is our liberation from the slavery of sin. Every celebration of the Eucharist is a memorial of Christ’s Passover. (What Does This Mean?)
10
“While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, And after blessing it he broke it, Gave it to them, and said, ‘Take; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup.... and said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.’” Mk 14:22-24 Artist: Nicolas Poussin
11
“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.” Lk 22:19 We will continue our study of the road to Calvary through a Seder meal and the stations of the cross. (Artist: Bouveret, 19 th C)
