December 3, 2012 At the end of today, you will be able to add, subtract and multiply polynomials. Warm-up: 1)Find the x and y intercepts for 2x – 3y = 9 2)What slope is perpendicular to 4x – y = 5? HW5.2 Pg. 231 – 232 #16, 17, 23 – 33 odd, 37 – 45 odd, 58 – 61 Quiz Th/Fri on Monomials and Polynomials.

Lesson 5.2 Polynomials A Polynomial is a monomial or a sum of monomials. POLYNOMIAL MONOMIALS EX: 3x²yz BINOMIALS EX: 2x – 3y TRINOMIALS EX: x² + 2x – 4 Can you think of an example that is NOT a polynomial?

Degree of a Polynomial The degree of a polynomial is the highest degree of the monomial term. Ex 1: 3xyzEx 2: 2x²y³ + xyz 4 Degree: 3 because the sum of each exponent is 1 for x, y, and z. Degree: 6 because the highest degree of the binomial is 6.

Determine whether it’s a polynomial. If so, what’s the degree? 1)3a 2 – 16a + 1 2)t 3 s 2 – 4s 3 + 5t 3) 4)

What do you remember about adding and subtracting polynomials? 1.(2x + y ) + ( 4x – 9y) 2.(x 3 – x + 1) – (3x – 1) TIP 1: Line up like terms before combining. TIP 2: When subtracting, change the signs of the 2 nd polynomial before combining like terms.

What do you remember about Multiplying Polynomials? 1. 2x(7x 2 – 3x + 5) 2.(3x – 2)(x + 5) 3.(n 2 + 6n – 2)(n + 4) TIP 4: Make a multiplication chart to keep the terms organized. Mult. n +4 n 2 +6n -2 n3n3 6n 2 4n 2 24n -2n -8 TIP 3: Use FOIL to multiply binomials. (First, Outside, Inside, Last)
