Sec. 9-2: Multiplying & Factoring
2
To multiply a MONOMIAL with a polynomial, simply distribute the monomial through to EACH term of the polynomial. i.e. 2x(3x 2 – 4x + 5) 6x 3 - 8x 2 + 10x Do: 3y(2y 4 – 3y 3 + 7y 2 – 5y + 4)
3
FACTORING a polynomial “undoes” multiplication. GCF: Greatest Common Factor: A number &/or variables that go into EACH term of a polynomial. i.e. Factor: 12x 2 y – 6xy 2 + 10xy What goes into EVERY term? 2xy 2xy(6x – 3y + 5) You can check your answer by multiplying.
4
Factor: 16b 4 – 4b 3 + 8b 2 Now, check you answer by multiplying… You should get back the original trinomial. 4b 2 (4b 2 – b + 2)
