OBJECTIVES: 1) TO EVALUATE POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS. 2) TO SIMPLIFY POLYNOMIALS BY COLLECTING LIKE TERMS. PDN: SIMPLIFY. 1)X²X³= 2)(X³Y²)(XY)= 5-1 Polynomials & Functions M11.D.1 M11.D.2
2
Vocab Terms- the parts of an algebraic expression that are seperated by addition or subtraction signs. Coefficients – in any term, the coefficient is the numeric factor of the term or the number that is multiplied by the variable. ex)
3
Vocab Degree of a Term – is the sum of the exponents of the variables in that term. ex) Degree of a Monomial – is the sum of the exponents of the variables in the monomial. ex) Degree of a Polynomial – the greatest of the degrees of the terms after like terms are combined.
4
Vocab Monomial – a polynomial with a single term ex) Binomial – a polynomial with two terms ex) Trinomial – a polynomial with three terms ex)
5
Vocab Polynomials are usually arranged in order of increasing or decreasing powers of one variable called ascending or descending order. Polynomial Function – is a function that can be defined by a polynomial. ex)
6
Examples: Polynomial Functions P(x) = 1 – x² find the function values 1) P(0) 2) P(1) 3) P(-1)

8
Vocab If two terms of a polynomial have the same variable raised to the same powers, the terms are called like terms.
9
Example: Collect like terms 1) 3 + 4x + y + 5 + 3y 2) 3x + 2x² + 4x + 5x² 3) 4x²y + xy + 5xy + 3x²y
