1 Pre-assessment sentences Teacher reads the sentences aloud, and students write them in the appropriate spaces on the graphic organizer. 1)The family teaches the puppy 20 different commands including sit, stay, shake, up, down, and speak. 2) Knowing that their puppy will get special service training to become the lifelong companion and helper to someone who needs a service dog makes it easier to say goodbye. 3) For the next fourteen months the family loves, cares for, and trains the puppy as if it were their own.

2 Guided Practice Sentences Teacher reads the sentences aloud, and students write them in the appropriate spaces on the graphic organizer. 1) Long Valley Middle School in Long Valley, NJ collected over 1,500 pairs of new and gently used shoes for Soles4Souls in the 2009–2010 school year. 2) Wearing shoes helps prevent infections and diseases from parasites such as hookworm. 3) There is an ongoing need for shoes in impoverished countries on the continents of Africa, Asia, and South America. 4) Infections can cause loss of limbs, chronic illnesses, and even death. 5) Soles4Souls sent over one million pairs of shoes to victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. 6) There are many natural disasters affecting people all over the world every year. 7) In some places, children must have shoes before they can attend school. 8) Wayne Elsey started a shoe drive and collected 250,000 pairs of shoes for victims of the 2004 Southeast Asia tsunami disaster. 9) There is a direct relationship between illness, access to education, and poverty. 10) Some of the world’s poorest children grow up without ever having a new pair of shoes or any shoes at all. 11) Elsey’s organization, Soles4Souls, has given away over 6 million pairs of shoes. 12) An estimated 300,000 children in the world have no shoes.
