Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
Lesson 4-2 Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
2
Do Now Identify the terms, like terms, coefficients, and constants. mn + 4m + 6n + 2mn Simplify the expression. 3x + 4x + 5y + 6 Simplify the expression. 5a - 2 – 3a + 7
3
Parts of Algebraic Expressions
Term – each part of an algebraic expression separated by addition or subtraction signs Example: 3x, 7, x, 2 Like terms – terms that contain the same variables Example: 3x and x, 7 and 2 Coefficient – the numerical part of a term that contains a variable Example: 3 and 1 Constant – a term without a variable Example: 7 and 2
