What are Life Skills? Life skills are essentially those abilities that help promote mental well-being and competence in people as they face the realities of life.

How do they help? They enable youth to translate knowledge, attitudes and values into action. They enable youth to enhance efforts to positively develop and change behaviour

What are the major life skills? Interpersonal skills Negotiating skills Coping with Emotions Coping with Stress

Examples of Communication and Interpersonal skills Effectively express a desire to delay initiation of sexual relations. Influence others and prevent discrimination related to HIV Communicate with parents/teachers/colleagues seeking advise and sharing information on sensitive topics.

Negotiation skills Saying No – negotiate for abstinence Negotiating condom use

Decision making and critical thinking Seek and find reliable sources of information about growing up, sexualities, sexual health Analyse potential of peer situations encountered and determine action to be taken

Coping and stress management skills Seek services for help with growing up and sexual health issues : counsellors, educators or teachers for dealing with peer pressure, early marriage
