3 Delivering Knowledge for Health Introduction What is an eBook? An eBook (or electronic book) is an electronic or digital equivalent of a conventional printed book and can be read on a computer.

4 Delivering Knowledge for Health Introduction The NHS Scotland e-Library currently provides access to more than 5000 eBooks. The collection contains subscription titles which require an Athens username and password and also a range of freely available books.

5 Delivering Knowledge for Health Introduction A wide selection of titles are available, both clinical and non- clinical, covering subjects such as Allied Health, Medicine, Social Care, Management, Education and Personal Development.

7 Delivering Knowledge for Health Accessing eBooks Before accessing eBooks it is advisable to logon to the e-Library with your Athens username and password.

8 Delivering Knowledge for Health Accessing eBooks In the navigation bar, click the Books link for browsing and searching eBooks.

9 Delivering Knowledge for Health Accessing eBooks Browsing the books can be done A-Z by title. You can search eBooks from here, using either title, subject or author keywords.

10 Delivering Knowledge for Health Accessing eBooks When browsing, your chosen letter will appear here, with options to browse further within that specific letter Navigation between pages can be done using the forward and back arrows

11 Delivering Knowledge for Health The More arrow link will give you full details of the book, including keywords Once you have located your title, you simply click it to open it in a new window

12 Delivering Knowledge for Health Accessing eBooks When searching, your original term will appear in the search box at all times Again, you can either open the title directly by clicking it, or check the full record using the More link The results appear in a ‘Tree’ format down the left hand side, when you click the eBooks option, the results will be displayed down the right hand side of the screen

13 Delivering Knowledge for Health eBook Providers NHS Scotland has three main providers of eBooks: OVID MD Consult NetLibrary

14 Delivering Knowledge for Health Accessing providers from the e-Library Search the e-Library Browse the list of Databases.

15 Delivering Knowledge for Health OVID OVID’s Books@OVID service offers access to over 50 key medical, nursing and pharmacy titles.

16 Delivering Knowledge for Health MD Consult MD Consult provides access to over 70 of the world’s most renowned reference books

17 Delivering Knowledge for Health NetLibrary NetLibrary provides the majority of our subscription based eBooks with access to over 4000 titles.

19 Delivering Knowledge for Health OVID Browse for books by Title or by Subject.

20 Delivering Knowledge for Health OVID Main navigation of eBooks is undertaken in the column down the left-hand side of the screen, with selected sections being displayed in the larger right-hand column. The chapter titles of the book can be viewed in the left-hand column, sections can be expanded by clicking the [+] icons, and minimised clicking the [-] icons. Once chapter headings are fully expanded, you can open the required section by clicking its title. You can also search the text within your selected eBook

21 Delivering Knowledge for Health OVID The contents of each page of your eBook will be displayed in this large right-hand column of the webpage, which the navigation tree still displayed on the left, enabling you to know where you are in the book. From here you can Save, Print and Email relevant chapters

22 Delivering Knowledge for Health OVID From the Main Search page you can use the Natural Language search to find answers to clinical questions. You can also limit your search to specific books. You can also search other fields such as Keyword, Author and Title.

23 Delivering Knowledge for Health OVID Results are highlighted in yellow. Results are organised by relevance using the Star system. Click on OVID full text or Complete Reference to view more details.

24 Delivering Knowledge for Health MD Consult Be sure to select the link for ATHENS users when verifying your password details

25 Delivering Knowledge for Health MD Consult You will be asked if you want to view the Core Collection, or the Pain Collection. To ensure you optimise the resources available, you should click the Select All option, before pressing the Continue button.

26 Delivering Knowledge for Health MD Consult Books are listed alphabetically by Author but you can also sort them by Subject speciality. Click on the Books tab to view the full list of titles.

27 Delivering Knowledge for Health MD Consult MD Consult also enables you to search the text within the chosen book MD Consult is visually similar to OVID, and offers the same functions for Saving, Printing and Emailing chapters. Navigation is again in the left-hand column, using the [+] and [-] buttons

28 Delivering Knowledge for Health MD Consult You can also refine your search to Diagnosis, Etiology, Treatment or Prognosis, using the Focus pull-down menu.

29 Delivering Knowledge for Health MD Consult Again keywords are highlighted. Click on the link to view the full section of the eBook.

32 Delivering Knowledge for Health NetLibrary Be sure to select the link for ‘ATHENS users, log in here’ when verifying your password details.

33 Delivering Knowledge for Health NetLibrary If you are accessing an eBook directly from the e-Library, the details of your title will be displayed along with a message asking you to login. The login link is in the top left hand corner of the screen

35 Delivering Knowledge for Health NetLibrary After logging-in you will see you chosen title displayed here View the book on-screen

36 Delivering Knowledge for Health NetLibrary By clicking the Search tab you can search within your selected title. As with OVID and MD Consult, the navigation appears in the left-hand column, with a PDF of the selected pages shown on the right. Navigation is done using the same [+] and [-] icons seen previously. Navigate between pages using the Previous and Next buttons or go directly to a specific page.

37 Delivering Knowledge for Health NetLibrary Search for eBooks by Full Text, Title, Keyword, Author or Subject.

38 Delivering Knowledge for Health NetLibrary More search options in the Advanced search including searching for ISBN and publisher, Boolean operators, and language and year limits.

39 Delivering Knowledge for Health NetLibrary Only one user can access one eBook at a time.

40 Delivering Knowledge for Health NetLibrary When you have finished viewing an eBook, click on the Close Item link to free this resource for other users.
