Welcome to Phase 2 Aims of the school To provide an enjoyable, broad and inclusive curriculum where children are encouraged to develop their skills and talents to achieve their full potential To learn through listening, sharing ideas, trying their very best and through not giving up and to have faith and seek help when they are finding something difficult.

Welcome to Phase 2 Community For parents/carers and school to work together in teaching children to stay safe and be healthy, self disciplined and motivated to be good citizens and make a positive contribution. To ensure that children have respect for all and are aware of their responsibilities towards parish, school, home and local UK and global communities and other faiths and cultures.

Welcome to Phase 2 Gospel Values To experience and reflect upon a sense of belonging to a wider world and to nurture a sense of love for God and their neighbour whilst working alongside parish and parents in teaching children about the Catholic faith to help them make informed choices in life. We aim to learn, grow and pray together in Jesus and be loving, caring and share a smile with everyone we meet. We aim to enjoy praying and praising God.

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. Morning Routine All Phase 2 Children enter school through the Junior Yard and need to be ready to line up when the bell goes at 8:55am. Children should have a bag or a book bag with them as well as a water bottle.Reading books should be in every day.

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. After school Routine All Phase 2 Children are dismissed from their classroom doors staff are available to talk to if you need them. End of school day times: Y2: 3:10pm Y3: 3:15pm

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. Smart Uniform High Expectations Children in Year 2 should be taught to tie their own tie and do their shoelaces. Please make sure that your child’s name is Marked in each piece of uniform –including shirts/blouses

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. PE Kit PE Kit should be brought to school in a PE Bag, with your child’s name on the outside. Please leave PE kits in school during the week. PE kit :Blue PE T-Shirt, Maroon Shorts, Black Pumps. Girls must remove ear rings before PE.

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. Reading Children should be involved in reading every Night for at least 10 minutes building to 20mins. This doesn’t have to be the school reading Book! We encourage the children to read a wide range of books and genres for pleasure – please record this in the yellow reading record too.

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. Homework All children will be given English and Maths Friday Homework on a Friday. This should be handed in on a Wednesday. Spelling Tests will take place on a Friday, children should spend time during the week learning their spellings.

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. New National Curriculum Y2 will complete the ‘National curriculum 2000’ During the year in English, Maths & Science having started it in Y1. They will start the ‘National Curriculum 2014’ for all other subjects. Y3 will be working fully with the ‘National Curriculum 2014’

Stronger emphasis on vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation and spelling (for example, the use of commas and apostrophes is now taught in KS1) Handwriting – is expected to be fluent, legible and speedy Spoken English has a greater emphasis.

Five-year-olds are expected to learn to count up to 100 (compared to 20 under the previous curriculum) and learn number bonds to 20 (currently up to 10) Simple fractions (1/4 and 1/2) will be taught from KS1, and by the end of primary school, children should be able to convert decimal fractions to simple fractions (e.g. 0.375 = 3/8) By the age of nine, children are expected to know times tables up to 12x12 (previously 10x10 by the end of primary school) Calculators will not be introduced until near the end of KS2, to encourage mental arithmetic.

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. What’s new in the Science National Curriculum? Strong focus on scientific knowledge and language, rather than understanding the nature and methods of science in abstract terms.

Computing replaces Information and Communication Technology (ICT), with a greater focus on programming rather than on operating programs From age five:children will learn to write and test simple programs, and to organise, store and retrieve datachildren will learn to write and test simple programs, and to organise, store and retrieve data From seven, they will be taught to understand computer networks, including the internet

Assessments With the new National Curriculum there will be a new set of Assessments, children will no longer be awarded Levels, assessments will be Based on ‘Expectations’ and what is expected at the end of each year groups. More information should be available by the November Parents evening - Tuesday 4 th & Thursday 6 th November.

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. Year 2 Statutory Requirements At the end of Key Stage 1, teacher assessment is key. Testing is statutory and children will informally complete a test or task, which will be used to support teacher assessment. Teachers only report their assessment of the children, NOT what they achieved in the test.

Information on the tasks and tests… Key Stage 1 (KS1) tasks and tests are designed to be administered informally as part of normal classroom activity, at any time during Year 2, so children may not know that they are being formally assessed. The results inform teachers’ overall assessments in English, mathematics and science, which are reported to parents and the Department of Education

We also add a letter to this c, b or a. c – just at that level b- secure at that level a – working towards the next level Children progress through the levels like this: P8 1c 1b 1a 2c 2b 2a 3

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. Results It is expected nationally that the majority of Year 2 year old children will achieve Level 2b by the end of the year. However, for some children achieving Level 1 is a real success for that particular individual. A child achieving Level 3 is working at a high level. Remember it is about the progress of your child based on their previous attainment. Do not worry about the other Children in the class.

PE Each child takes part in 2 hours of PE each Week: 1 hour with their class teacher and hour with a specialist sports coach. 2C: Monday & Wednesday 2/3D: Thursday & Friday 3M: Wednesday & Friday

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. Spanish Spanish is taught across the school by a Specialist Spanish Teacher: Miss Campbell.

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. Phase Worship & Mass The school community are called to prayer each Thursday morning in the school hall for either Phase worship or Parish Mass. This is an opportunity for the school community to pray together and is not an assembly or a performance.

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. Christmas Phase 2 present the Service of Carols and Readings to the school community on the last day of term Friday 19 th December at 9:30am.

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. Parental support Ensure children get plenty of sleep! Help children to get in to good habits of reading and keeping on top of homework Encourage and support – not pressure. Encourage children to work hard rather than to achieve a particular level. If giving rewards – it’s better to give for effort rather than results. Use the targets set at Parents’ evening – these are individual to each pupil.

In Jesus we learn, grow and pray together. Parental support Reading record – completed daily and signed. Encourage children to complete and make comments on their reading also. Please record all reading – not just the school reading books. It is good for children to read a range of books/genres. Make use of the Questions on the inside front cover of the book.
