2. WHAT IS KINESIOLOGY? Kinesiology is the study of human and animal movement, performance, and function by applying the sciences of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, psychology, and neuroscience. Applications of kinesiology to human health include: biomechanics and orthopedics; strength and conditioning; sport psychology; methods of rehabilitation, such as physical and occupational therapy; and sport and exercise.

3. ACADEMIC CONTENTS What types of classes will you take in your chosen major, what types of assignments will be required, what types of publications will you be required to read and respond to? What do professors, graduate students, upper-level students say about the writing in this discipline? Classes required for the Kinesiology Major include: 2 courses in Anatomy and Physiology, 2 courses in general Chemistry, 1 course in Statistics, 1 course in Biology, and 1 course in Psychology. Each of these classes required at least an average of “C” or better with a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

5. CONVENTIONS AND EXPECTATIONS What are the conventions and expectations of writing in your academic community? Structurally speaking, writing in this field has to incorporate a hypothesis, methods/results, and conclusions. Writing in the Kinesiology field is mostly scientific; very clear cut and involves a number of ideas. Its also very important that kinesiologists are able to write the scientific information findings in a way that the general public can understand.

6. ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES What academic and professional societies or associations are there within your field? What publications are connected to these groups? What are those publications like? What must one do to submit research or writing to these publications? The major associations within the kinesiology field are the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Kinesiology Association. Most of the publications within these associations include, reflections, analyses, journals, essays and research articles that members have completed and are sharing with the community. To become apart of one of these associations, they usually require a membership fee, along with some background information.

ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES CONTINUED In order for on to submit a piece of writing into the association, they must submit the paper through the website and high ranked people within that association will look over the information and they will decide whether or not it will be posted. They will look for multiple repetitions of an experiment, and strong evidence in your paper to make sure that the paper is not made up.

8. GENRES What genres are most used in your field, both in academia and in the professional community? What purposes do those genres accomplish?. In other words, what genres will you have to write in, and why? Share some examples of writing in your major/field and discuss particular conventions or topics that are found often. Most of the popular genres that are used in academic and professional communities are basically the same as the types of writings that you will have to read in and write in as kinesiology majors. Good writing in kinesiology requires good grammar, vocabulary, syntax, formatting, content and creativity. These genres in kinesiology allow fellow kinesiologist to communicate with each other and rely information from recent experiments or studies out the kinesiology community.

GENRES CONTINUED Popular kinesiology journals that are published to share ideas, experiments and studies are The Sports Medicine, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Journal of Applied Physiology, and The American Journal of physiology. Within the journals one will find experiments conducted on the human body, new types of technology, and issues that are being discussed within the kinesiology field. In kinesiology, MLA works cited list are very common and important. They help prove that the information provided is not made up or stolen from anyone.

INTERVIEW WITH MELYNDA OZAN What is the difference between doing writing for a Bachelor’s degree and writing for a Doctorate and Master’s degree? - for the bachelor’s degree the expectations are not as specific and have more diverse writing styles. The Doctorate and Master expectations are very specific and are more focused on what career you want to go into. What databases are most useful for doing research in the kinesiology field? - Pub-Med and Sport Discuss. What tips can you give to students who are going to be doing these kind or writings? - Be familiar with library resources, ALWAYS cite your sources, and how to cite them.
