3 Lesson 3-3 Example 1 LANGUAGES Of the 40 foreign exchange students attending a middle school, 20 speak French, 23 speak Spanish, and 22 speak Italian. Nine students speak French and Spanish, but not Italian. Six students speak French and Italian, but not Spanish. Ten students speak Spanish and Italian, but not French. Only 4 students speak all three languages. Use a Venn diagram to find how many exchange students do not speak any of these languages. Use a Venn Diagram

Since 4 students speak all 4 languages, place a 4 in the section that represents all three languages. Use the other information given in the problem to fill in the other sections as appropriate.

5 Solve Lesson 3-3 Example 1 Use a Venn Diagram Add the numbers in each region of the diagram: 1 + 9 + 6 + 4 + 10 + 2 = 32 Since there are 40 exchange students altogether, 40 – 32 = 8 of them do not speak French, Spanish, or Italian.
