1
Cell Parts and Functions The structures within the cell function in storing and releasing energy, building and repairing cell parts, getting rid of waste materials, responding to the environment, and reproducing. Cell structures are called organelles meaning “little organ”
2
Label your animal cell diagram Chromosomes Centrioles
3
Cell Membrane -Limits what materials enter or leave the cell -Allows the cell to change shape under pressure -Thin flexible envelope surrounding the cell
4
Nucleus -control center of the cell that directs all cell activities -contains chromosomes and nucleolus, DNA, and RNA
5
Nuclear Membrane -separates the nucleus from the other parts of the cell -controls the substances that enter and leave the nucleus
6
Nucleolus -a dark spot found inside the nucleus -small dense organelle within the nucleus where RNA is made -made up of RNA and protein
7
Chromosomes -A large mass of thin threads made of DNA -contain instructions for the finished products of the cell -Passes on the traits of the cell to new cells
8
Cytoplasm -jelly like substance -area between the nucleus and the cell membrane -all the living material of the cell, outside of the nucleus
9
Endoplasmic Reticulum -smooth and rough ER -tubular passageways that lead out from the nuclear membrane -Transports substances back and forth from the nucleus to the other parts of the cell
10
Ribosomes -structures where proteins are made -small, grain like bodies made primarily of RNA -Some attached to ER or floating free in cytoplasm
11
Mitochondria -power generators of the cell—releases energy -rod shaped organelles -Smooth outer membrane and greatly folded inner membrane
12
Vaculoes -storage areas -Fluid-filled membrane surrounded cavities inside a cell -Larger in plant cells
13
Golgi Body -packages protein and carbohydrates for export from the cell -flattened, layered, sac- like structure located near the nucleus
14
Centrioles -help divide the nucleus during mitosis -composed of small spindles
15
-suicide sacks -common in animal cells -round organelles surrounded by a membrane that contain digestive enzymes
16
Label your plant cell diagram Centrioles
17
Chloroplasts -a disc shaped organelle containing chlorophyll -photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts
18
Cell Wall -thick, rigid membrane that surrounds the plant cell -bonds with other cell walls to form the structure of the plant
