Class Notes Topic: ________________________ Name ________________________________________ Class ________________________________________ Period ________________________________________ Date _____________________________________ Notes: Acids and Bases 1. What is an ION? 2. Why is an atom “charged”? 3. What is pH? 1. A positively or negatively charged atom. 2. It has more or less electrons than protons. 3. pH stands for potential of Hydrogen Ions
3
5. What types of substances do these Ions form? 5. More H+ particles in a solution make an ACID More OH- particles in a solution make a BASE 4. What types of Hydrogen Ions are there? 4. There are positive Hydrogen (H+) ions and negative Hydrogen Ions (OH-) called Hydroxide Ions
4
6. What is the pH scale? 6. The pH scale tells you the strength of the acid or base. It is a scale numbered 1-14. 7. What colors are associated with Acids and Bases? 7. Ion sensitive papers or probes turn “HOT”colors (Red, Orange & Yellow) for Acids and “COOL” colors (Green, Blue, Purple) for Bases 1 = strongest acid 7 = neutral 14 = strongest base
