Target Explain the spread of the French Revolution. Identify changes in French govt. during the revolution.

Spread of Revolution King Louis XVI send troops to the National Assembly on July 14 th, 1789. – Crowd fears oppression – take up arms Outbreak of violence. – New govt. – New flag. Fear spreads throughout France. – Peasants rise up against manors.

End of the Old Regime Outlawed the tithe. Removed the privileges of the 1 st /2 nd Estates. Declaration of the Rights of Man. – Freedom, Govt. role, equality Emigrants and King plot together. Govt. Reform – 83 Districts (Departments), elections of local offices, seizure of Catholic lands

Constitution 1791 Constitution limits the Kings power. – Lasts one year. Tax-paying male voters elected. Wealthy still had majority of power. King Louis XVI agrees-secretly plots.

Legislative Assembly Legislative Assembly is divided. – Conservatives – Moderates. – Liberals. War is the only thing they can agree on. Emperor Leopold II (Austria) and other want to restore the monarchy in France. War breaks out.

War and the End of the Monarchy Prussia and German states join Austria. French defeats/failures lead to change. Radicals seize the Commune – Paris City Govt. – Accuse King Louis XVI of plotting against them. Have him and his family arrested. Office of the king is suspended in 1792. France again pushes for a new Constitution.
