Basic Requirements Role of the Preamble –Synchronization (time/frequency) –Cell search (discriminate segments) –C/I estimation –Channel estimation –Determine location of FCH Require rapid acquisition and low PAPR

Further Requirements Support MIMO channel estimation –Up to 4 antenna support –Preamble for each antenna must cover entire bandwidth Large cell ID set to support femto/pico base stations –19 macroBS x 3 sector x 30 fBS/sector = around 1700

Legacy (16e) Preamble Single symbol per frame Meets basic requirements: Supports 3 segments with distinct preamble sequences by subcarrier offset Sequence based on cell ID, and permutation is derived from it Only single antenna solution Only 114 distinct cell IDs Modulates 1 subcarrier in 3, which gives time domain structure useful for initial acquisition

16m Preamble Required to meet additional requirements –MIMO –Expanded set (> factor 15) Not significantly increase complexity –Not expand search space by much Exploit superframe structure

MIMO Support (examples) Trade frequency sampling and mobility against overhead Need to define requirements Still use offset to discriminate between segments Initial acquisition based on first preamble, information in FCH signals presence and location of other preambles

Supporting Expanded Sequence Set Large search space with single preamble not ideal Suggest using multiple preamble symbols One of these could be from the legacy system –First preamble is in 16m superframe header (SFH) –Further preamble to coincide with legacy preamble Can use 2 preambles for other functions, such as MIMO support

Summary 16m should exploit superframe structure to enhance preamble functionality MIMO channel estimation would support enhanced MIMO functionality (low mobility) Require more sequences for cell ID, combining multiple preamble symbols limits complexity

Text Proposal Insert into SDD -----------------Text Start---------------- The first preamble is contained in the superframe header and is used for initial acquisition. Further preambles may be transmitted within the superframe in order to support enhanced functionality, such as MIMO channel estimation and an expanded cell ID set. -----------------Text Start----------------
