Asia Pacific CUCM Relocation July, 2012

2 Executive Summary Business Problem: We currently have five servers located in Japan serving IP Telephony call processing and voicemail to SPE locations throughout Asia. There are heightened concerns regarding the location of the Cisco Unified Communications Manager aka CUCM cluster (currently split between our two office locations in Tokyo, Japan) with respect to earthquakes.

5 Approach One weekend of telephony Interruption region wide (including up to four hours without voicemail) and two hours downtime/interruption in Toranomon,Tokyo to replace and test two SRST voice gateways. Telephones for the region would be interrupted several times during the planned transition to the new cluster location and it is assumed that this would take place outside of business hours commencing on a Friday evening at the close of business at the most Westerly location (Singapore GMT+8) to be back in service by 8am on Monday morning at the most Easterly location (Sydney GMT+10). Voicemail Servers would be off line to enable full backup with messages to be taken and restored to the replacement servers (estimated 4 hours down time). The gateway upgrade at the Tokyo location would present an outage while the Telco lines are physically cross patched between the existing voice gateway and the replacement (hot cut). There should also be a period of SRST testing at the location to ensure the new gateways function as expected in this mode (2 hours total). Risk Mitigation is built into the plan by not attempting to move the cluster, instead we purchase replacement servers for the new locations. This gives us the ability to roll back to the old server cluster (both Call Manager and Unity Connection voicemail). The voice gateways could also be rolled back or swapped out for the original gateways, should this be required.
