1/18/13 Bell Ringer O What is the equation for photosynthesis? O What is the equation for cellular respiration? Objective: To review for the final exam
2
Agenda O Study guide questions? O Punnett square practice O Meiosis
3
Punnett Squares Steps O In dogs, erect ears (E) is dominate over droopy ears (e). What are the results if two heterozygous dogs have a litter of puppies. O 1. Create a KEY O Dominant, recessive O Heterozygous (different) O Homozygous (same) O 2. Figure out what the parents are O 3. Create a punnett square O 4. Solve
4
Punnett Squares Steps O Sully is from a species called Blutons. Most Blutons either have short horns or long horns. Short horns are dominant (H) and long horns are recessive (h). O If a female Bluton with long horns has a child with a male Bluton with heterozygous short horns, what are the chances that their offspring will have long horns? O 1. Create a KEY O Dominant, recessive O Heterozygous (different) O Homozygous (same) O 2. Figure out what the parents are O 3. Create a punnett square O 4. Solve
5
Steps O Buzz Lightyear’s cleft chin (chin dimple) is a dominant trait. Jessie does not have a cleft chin. Buzz’s cleft chin is homozygous (he is purebred). O What is the probability of their offspring inheriting and not inheriting a cleft chin? O 1. Create a KEY O Dominant, recessive O Heterozygous (different) O Homozygous (same) O 2. Figure out what the parents are O 3. Create a punnett square O 4. Solve
6
O The ability to roll the tongue (R) is determined by a dominant gene while the recessive gene results in the inability to roll the tongue (r). O A man and his wife can both roll their tongues and are surprised to find that their son cannot. O Explain this by showing the genotypes of all three persons. (Note: you do not need to do a Punnett Square for this problem).
7
Co-Dominance Steps O In crocus flowers, white (F w ) and purple (F P ) colors are co-dominant, and result in a purple and white striped flower when both genes are present. What are the possible results from the cross- pollination of a striped crocus with a white crocus? O 1. Create a KEY O Dominant, recessive O Heterozygous (different) O Homozygous (same) O 2. Figure out what the parents are O 3. Create a punnett square O 4. Solve

O Your dog has straight hair (H). He is a homozygous for straight hair. Your friend’s dog has curly hair (h) and is homozygous. Straight hair is dominant and curly is recessive. They have a puppy, will it have curly or straight hair. What is the possibility of each?
