Value + project Promoting patients’ involvement in EU supported health-related projects Patient involvement and “meaningful” patient involvement Literature review, qualitative approach Benefits that patients can bring to projects Policy recommendations

Meaningful patient involvement Definition  Patients take an active role in activities or decisions that will have consequences for the patient community, because of their specific knowledge and relevant experience as patients. The involvement must be:  Planned  Appropriately resourced  Carried out  Evaluated According to the values and purposes of the participants From: EPF, The Value+ Handbook

Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Definition HTA is a form of research that examines the consequences of using a healthcare technology The assessment must be a multidisciplinary process:  Medical  Social  Economic  Ethical Related to the use of a health technology in a systematic, transparent, unbiased and robust manner. From: Understanding Health Technology Assessment, July 2008.

Goal of HTA To inform the development of safe, effective, health policies that are patient focused and seek to achieve the best value Examples of such decisions:  Should treatment A be reimbursed in a national healthcare system? For which patients should it be provided? For how long should patients receive the treatment?  Should every available tratment for rheumatoid arthritis be provided or should the resources be used to give home care to people with dementia?  Should everyone over 50 have their cholesterol tested or should the funds be used to provide vaccines against HPV (Human Papilloma Virus, associated with cervical cancer) for teenage girls?

Patient experience The evidence that patients and carers provide is set in the real world (based on experience) Patient evidence  The burden of the illness The limitations it imposes The impact on the mental wellbeing And more …  The technology being assessed The benefits and the risks it brings The expectations and needs The outcomes And more …  The impact on caregivers
