On This Day in History O.T.D. Tuesday, October 6 1884- The American Library Association was founded in order to enhance learning and provide access to information for all. 1889- American inventor Thomas Edison shows his first motion picture. On Oct. 6, 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was shot to death by Islamic militants while watching a military parade.

OTD Wednesday, October 7 1913-Ford Motor company’s first moving assembly line 1968- The motion picture association of America adopted a film-rating system. 2001- Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit a record- breaking 73 home-runs. (762 career)

OTD Thursday, October 8 1871- The Great Chicago Fire erupted. The blaze destroyed four square miles of the city, killing about 250 people and leaving some 90,000 homeless. 2001- U.S. President George W. Bush announces the establishment of the Office of Homeland Security. 2005- A major earthquake flattened villages on the Pakistan-India border, killing an estimated 86,000.

OTD Friday, October 9 1873- Charles Walgreen, American pharmacist and businessman was born. 1888- The Washington Monument officially opens to the general public. 2006- North Korea announced it had conducted its first nuclear weapons test.
