Uganda High elevation gives it mild climate Rich soil and plentiful rain Plantains – a kind of banana Plantations grow coffee, cotton, and tea for export Coffee is ¾ of exports

The Ugandans Live mainly in villages 2/3 are Christians, rest are Muslims or practice traditional African religions Idi Amin, a dictator, drove Hindus and Sikhs out in 1972 40 ethnic groups Idi Amin

History and Government Ruled by the British until 1962 Autonomy – self- government Kings lost power in 1967 Since 1990s, ethnic groups have had ceremonial kings Republic with elected president AIDS is a problem

Rwanda and Burundi Both have mountains, hills, and high plateaus Watershed – region that is drained by a river Great Lakes and Congo River

Rwanda and Burundi Moderate climate due to high elevation Endangered species – a plant or animal threatened with extinction Farmers work small plots of land Fish on Lake Tanganyika and Kivu

Rwanda and Burundi Landlocked, so they have trouble getting their goods to foreign buyers No railroads Most goods transported by road to Lake Tanganyika

Ethnic Conflict Hutu and Tutsi are largest groups Power struggle turned to civil war Genocide – deliberate murder of a group of people because of their race or culture Refugees – people who flee to another country to escape persecution or disaster
