Advising Information Spring 2016

Registration Dates November 3 & 4 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (lunch break 12:00 -1:00 pm) Day classes are canceled (7:00 am – 4:00 pm) November 3 – 6 (current students only) All advising appointments will be 45 minutes beginning November 5. November 9 – December 2 (all students) Faculty will be assigned up to 8 new students.

Registration Dates December 11 (all students) 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (lunch break 12:00 -1:00 pm) Additional days : December 14 – 18 December 28 – 30 January 5 – 9 Students can register online November 2 – 30. They will receive a letter in the mail from the Registrar’s Office if they meet the criteria.

Advising Students The Advising Handbook, test placement scores, and the advising check sheet are all located on the Portal. Advising/Forms & Documents/Academic Advising A few reminders: Complete an advising check sheet for each student and submit to your Division Chair. Enroll students in any remedial courses needed. (Students must enroll and stay enrolled in remediation until it is complete.)

Advising Students Students needing Basic Composition and/or Reading will be limited on courses they are allowed to take. Required scores are listed on the recommended degree completion plans in the Advising Handbook and under course descriptions in the College Catalog. Students should be placed in a computer course (if needed) based upon their computer skills. Student can take Intro to Computers while enrolled in Reading. Students should be strongly encouraged to take required classes that are offered on a rotation basis.

Advising New Students If a student needs remediation in two areas, enroll the student in College Success. New students (who have never attended UACCM) need to sign up for new student orientation. Faculty will sign students up through Appointment Plus. Orientation dates are scheduled for December 15 and January 7. (encourage students to sign up for first date if at all possible) Students need to make sure to do the following: Complete a computer account form during advising Go to Admissions for student ID and parking decal

Quantitative Literacy Quantitative Literacy can be taken instead of College Algebra for a variety of transfer degrees. Quantitative Literacy requires a 19 on the ACT Math and a 36 on Compass Algebra. What is Quantitative Literacy? It is number competence or number knowledge for everyday use. Learn about personal budgeting, interest, installment buying, student loans, home buying, probability, odds, expected value, the Arkansas Lottery, gathering and organizing data, misuse of statistics, etc.

Advising Notes The AS Liberal Arts degree no longer specifies that the electives must contain 15 GE electives and 10 Institutional electives. Students complete 25 hours from any of the listed electives. * Elective courses must be courses applicable to a specific baccalaureate degree at a four-year institution. If you advise an AS Business major, make sure to check the electives. Intro to Business is required for ATU. Business Communications is required for UCA.

Advising Notes This fall, a few students were enrolled in ECD courses instead of EDUC courses. If you advise a student wanting to work with children, check to see if they want to become a licensed teacher (EDUC) or work in a daycare setting (ECD) before enrolling the student in classes. Students are only allowed to take Math for Nurses, if they are already an LPN. Reminder: Students who take Nursing, ECD, EMT, or Education courses are required to complete a background check.

Advising Notes Medical Terminology is not offered in the Spring. A course substitution will need to be used for the Certificate of Proficiency for EMT (Contact Mrs. Rodgers for questions) The Certificate for Nursing Assisting is on hold. Nursing Assisting is currently being offered through Workforce. Remind students to check their email and complete the Monkey Survey pertaining to advising.

Financial Aid Pell and Loan Students Must enroll in classes toward their current major Can repeat courses for which they have an F, W, or AW Can repeat a course one time if they have successfully completed it before Must take 12 hours to receive full Pell benefits. Aid can be pro-rated if enrolled in less than 12 hours. Must enroll in at least 6 hours toward major to qualify for a loan AR Challenge (Traditional) Must take 15 hours for Spring Must complete remediation within the first 30 hours

Financial Aid AR Challenge (Non-Traditional) Can qualify as part-time student 6-8 hours = $500 9-14 hours = $750 15 hours and above = $1000 Must complete remediation within first 30 hours UACCM Scholarships Must enroll in 15 hours to maintain eligibility VA Students Must visit with Belinda Rallens after they have registered to be certified for spring semester

Due Dates Payment for Spring 2016 is due December 28. Students access their bill through Campus Connect. Payment will be due the day of registration for students who register after the due date. Priority deadline for graduation applications is November 18. Final deadline for graduation applications is January 29. Remind students to complete graduation applications through the Registrar’s page on the Portal. Advisors need to submit a signed degree audit.
