The Different types

Built of layers of runny lava from nonexplosive eruptions. Lava spreads over a wide area. Creates a volcano with gently sloping sides. Though not steep they can be enourmous! In fact Hawaii’s Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world. Measured from seafloor to base is is even larger than Mt. Everest.

Made of pyroclastic material Produced from moderately explosive eruptions. Pyroclastic material forms steep slopes. Usually small and erupt only a short time Often occur in clusters, commonly on the sides of other volcanoes. Usually erode quickly because material isn’t cemented together.
6
Called composite or stratovolcanoes, most common type. Form explosive eruption followed by quieter flows of lava. Combination of both types forms alternating layers of P.M. and lava. Have broad bases and sides that get steeper toward the top.
