THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION – THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE Britain ver. its American colonies Capitalism in America was developing rapidly The British Parliament wanted to protect the British manufacturers – passed a number of laws designed to paralyse the rising industry and commerce: EXAMPLES: 1) colonies produced raw materials (iron, steel, timber, tar, tobacco) – but they were forbidden to built their own manufacturing industries 2)Direct trade of the English colonies with the French and Spanish settlements in America was also prohibited 3 3 3 3

THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION – THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE Britain ver. its American colonies The British government imposed duties on tea, paper, glass and other articles of general consumption The colonies had to pay the upkeep of English troops stationed in colonies – not to protect them but to oppress them – anti-English feeling raised The Sons of Liberty Radical patriots – wanted to decide about taxes even full independence, slogan: „ no taxation without representation“ (representation in London Parliament)

1773 Boston Tea Party, December In protest against taxes on tea, a party of about 50 citizens of Boston, disguised as Indians, attacked 3 English ships in harbour – threw boxes into the sea - The first open act of violence against the English

1774 The 1st Continental Congress Following the Boston Tea Party, in 1774 the first Continental Congress met in Philadelphia – the first unofficial American government – they agreed the secret military training to prepare the people for armed resistance 8 8 8

1775 Shots in Lexington The first shots of the War were fired in Lexington against „Redcoaats“ – (Americans called English soldiers) – they were trying to seize an illegal store of arms at Concord. 9 9

1775 The 2nd Continental Congress Met again in Philadelphia, but this time as an openly rebellious body – organized American troops about Boston into the American Continental Army – commander: George Washington

1776, July 4th The Declaration of Independence The Congress on 4th July 1776 signed the Declaration of Independence and appointed George Washington as the commander-in-chief. The author of the document – Thomas Jefferson

In the first years of the war Washington´s army suffered several deafeats NEGATIVES soldiers lacked discipline and military training, quality of officers was poor, shortage of food and clothing, Americans had not navy, American colonies were jealous of one another POSITIVES They fought in their own, vast land, had revolutionary army, English fought 3000 miles from home

1777 Saratoga – 1st great victory In 1777 the Americans achieved the first great victory of the war at Saratoga, where they forced the British general Burgoyne to surrender It was the turning point in the whole course of war The North was placed permanently under American control Another direct result of Saratoga – alliance with France – brought men, money, supplies, the navy Spain and Holland also began to support the Americans

1781 Yorktown, Virginia The war continued to the South, Americans suffered many defeats, but they won the last battle, which was decisive – the English Commander, Lord Cornwallis, surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia, 1781 The war was practically over, but King George III. refused to acknowledge defeat for another 2 years The peace treaty was finally signed in 1783

1789 Constitution The Constitution that was adopted in 1789 was at that time the most democratic constitution in the world. 22
