1. Warm-up: Take a minute to identify the “tone words” that you are struggling with the most or that you would like to review today. We will be making a list of words that you are having trouble with and try to study them before the test on Tuesday.

2. 1. If you were absent yesterday, please see me right after class to receive important handouts. 2. Have your parents sign the return slip on the bottom of the syllabus. Return them by August 26 th for participation points. 3. “Tone Words” test on Tuesday. 4. Dialectical Journals due Wednesday. *If you are confused about either of the above 2 items, see me after class. 5. Does everyone have textbooks?

3.  Get out your syllabus from yesterday.  Remember, it’s a recession– keep your syllabus.  If you missed class yesterday, please come see me after class to discuss the syllabus.

4. QUIZ! 1. How should you obtain your make-up work from Ms. Pierce? a. Raise your hand in the middle of a discussion to announce that you were absent and need the work you missed. b. See Ms. Pierce after class or after school, since she is a busy teacher before and during class. 2. You are required to get your make-up work… a. About a month after you are absent b. Immediately following an absence c. You don’t need to get it; Ms. Pierce will remember that you were absent and will personally deliver it to your home the following day.

5. You are expected to not only complete required assignments on time, but to do so with the integrity that is expected of your honors status. You are to display integrity by following the district’s policy regarding plagiarism.

6. If you are caught plagiarizing, you will receive the following negative consequences:  You will be issued a written a referral  You will be given a zero for the plagiarized assignment, without an opportunity to make up the grade for this assignment  You will risk being removed from the honors program and Health Academy program  You will lose my trust and my belief in your integrity  *Note: the same rules and consequences apply to plagiarizing test answers.

7. QUIZ! 1. What counts as plagiarizing?

8. Each day, there will be a warm-up on the board. These warm-ups require your full attention and should be done quietly, unless otherwise instructed by the teacher. Keep all your warm-ups, with dates written on them and in order by date, in a specified location in your binder. Each week, warm-ups will be collected as follows:  Monday: 1 st period  Tuesday: 2 nd period  Wednesday: 4 th period  Thursday: 5 th period  Friday: 6 th period

9. If you miss a warm-up exercise due to an excused absence, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to see me immediately upon your return or find the warm-up on my website. You have one day to make up and turn in a missed warm-up. If you come more than one day after your return from an absence, you may not possibly be permitted to make-up the warm-up work.

10.  You will bring a silent reading book of your choice to class every Thursday  Silent reading will be required for the first ten minutes of class on select Thursdays.  Points will be given for on-task silent reading.  You will forfeit your silent reading points if: 1) you fail to have a book or fail to begin reading as soon as the bell rings, or 2) you are off-task during silent reading.  You will keep a daily log of the book(s) that you read each semester.  You will select a book from your log from which you will write an in-class book report each semester.  Only books that are documented on reading log will be accepted for book reports.

13. Make sure to have your parents fill out the return slip at the bottom of the syllabus. Returning this means that they have read and agree with the content covered in the syllabus If you return it by the date specified, you will receive 10 points. After that, it will be worth 5 points.

14. In groups of 3-4, I will allow you to discuss words that you are struggling with. You should use this time to swap definitions and thoughts about the words that you are struggling with the most.

15. To help you prepare for the test, I will give you my definitions and explanations for some of the tone words that you are struggling with. So… 1.) I need 4 volunteers to help me write the definitions for these tone words on the board. 2.) I will take the first “troublesome word” that is decided upon for each group; this is your chance to get help, so USE IT! 3.) As they are written on the board, revise your definitions.
